Success Beyond Her Wildest Dreams

yvonne glenn   Imagine you have taken that first courageous step and started the company of your dreams. You have written a conservative, but complete business plan. You have taken business classes, obtained certifications, and begun marketing your services. You figure that, if you work hard and are lucky, in a few years you will be getting government contracts on a regular basis. That is what Yvonne Glenn, owner and President of Trofholz Technologies, Inc. (TTI), thought when she incorporated her business in
October 2002.

What she did not know was that her success would extend far beyond her dreams. TTI’s growth in 2005 has topped all expectations at 27 times the sales figures of 2002. In fiscal year 2005, TTI has been awarded as a prime or subcontractor nearly 100 contracts totaling over $15.4 million. The biggest challenge for TTI, which provides information technology products and services, has not been winning or working on contracts, it has been ensuring that their infrastructure keeps up with their growth.

Glenn believes that much of her success is due to her initial focus on four key areas: developing her business plan, establishing reliable strategic alliances, identifying and obtaining all the certifications for which she was eligible, and getting the appropriate General Services Administration (GSA) contracts.

In March 2003, Glenn first contacted The FTC and requested information and assistance in obtaining her Small Business Administration’s 8(a) program certification. She also took forward looking classes from The FTC that would help her with future federal contract administration and met with our counselors several times. Glenn used The FTC’s classes to better understand how to prepare her offer to GSA and subsequently received two GSA Schedules. These schedules have provided her with an easier way for federal customers to purchase her services.

Glenn continues to strengthen her business alliances by taking advantage of the networking opportunities offered by The FTC. Glenn states, “The FTC’s GovLink Conference 2005 was very helpful for my organization and perfect timing for us to attend, because I am currently putting together my 2006 Business Plan. The presentations I saw along with some of the networking we were able to do will contribute to my planning process.”

The FTC classes have become part of TTI’s training of new personnel. “We are growing very rapidly and The FTC’s training services and government knowledge will be a great resource for us in teaching our new employees the basics of government contracting,” says Glenn.

Glenn’s advice to small business owners:
•  Keep your cash flow under control
•  Partner with other small businesses
•  Reinvest your profits back into the company
•  Be frugal with expenditures
•  Ensure your infrastructure keeps pace with growth
•  Develop and adjust plans for this year and beyond
