First Annual Placer County Super Seminar
August 15, 2006
On August 15, 2006 at the Sunset Center in Rocklin, California, The Federal Technology Center (The FTC) hosted the first of what we hope to be an annual Placer County Getting to Know Your Local Resources Super Seminar. With more than 230 registered for this event, the interest in how to do business with the various government agencies remains high. An introductory welcome was presented by Dave Snyder, the recently assigned Director, Placer County Office of Economic Development. A panel representing local agencies included Michael Valdez, Senior Buyer, City of Roseville; Terry Richardson, Director, Community Development, City of Rocklin; and Steve Art, Manager, Economic Development, City of Lincoln.
Other speakers included Mary Conway-Jepson, Marketing and Outreach Specialist/8a, U.S. Small Business Administration; Indria Gillespie, Director, Sierra College Small Business Development Center (SBDC); Dave Seward, Purchasing Manager, Placer County; Eric Mandell, Chief of Communications and Outreach, Procurement Division, State of California Department of General Services; Greg Schneider, Purchasing Supervisor, Sierra College; and from the California Department of Transportation: Cris Galia, Acquisition Branch Chief, Department of Procurement and Contracts; Ed Walker, Purchasing Specifications Analyst; and Colleen Bacon, Associate Administrator Quality Review Analyst.
An afternoon session, conducted by Carol Bowyer of The FTC, titled Getting Started with Government Contracting helped business owners organize and prioritize the steps toward winning government contracts.
Feedback from the small business owners and their staff has been extremely helpful and informative, and the lessons learned will be applied to the planning for the next event. More than 80 percent of the attendees reported that the presentations provided useful and valuable information which can be helpful as they include government contracting opportunities in their business plans. Co-hosts for this well attended event were Placer County and the City of Rocklin as well as the Sierra College SBDC. |
