On April 6, 2005, The Federal Technology Center (The FTC) received the Outstanding Center Award, a national award presented by the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers at the association’s annual conference in Nashville, Tennessee. This award is presented every year to the center which best represents the Association’s high standards and dedication to the procurement profession. The FTC, which is located in North Highlands, California, is one of 93 procurement technical assistance centers located throughout the United States.

The Federal Technology Center promotes economic development in California by facilitating technology transfer between government and the private sector, and by helping small businesses successfully compete for federal, state, and local government contracts. They provide many free government contracting courses and seminars, and offer one-on-one counseling in all aspects of government contracting.

In October 2000, The FTC procurement assistance program was established to provide free government contract training and counseling to small businesses in ten counties in the Sacramento region. Recognized for its outstanding program, in October 2003 the Defense Logistics Agency designated The FTC as the Statewide program to serve the businesses in 46 counties. In January 2005, the program’s service area was again expanded to include

From October 2000 through April 1, 2005 , The FTC assisted approximately 2,500 businesses by conducting 405 classes and 6,620 counseling sessions. During this period business clients reported receiving over 5,000 government contract awards, totaling $240.4 million. Based on the federal standard, these contract awards translate into over 5,600 jobs which have been created or retained in a wide variety of industries. Approximately 75 percent of the $240.4 million in government contract awards received by The FTC’s clients represent federal dollars which, without The FTC’s help, could have gone to businesses in other states.

The FTC works with many community partners to reach out to small businesses throughout California. “The FTC’s success would not be possible without the support of our many community partners who contribute either cash or in-kind support to satisfy our federal grant’s matching requirement” affirms Alice Astafan, CEO of The FTC.

Small businesses interested in taking advantage of The FTC’s free services, should go online to www.TheFTC.org or call 916.334.9388.
