Federal Applied Engineering
Laboratory Provides Equipment for
On Thursday, April 20, 2000, the Defense Microelectronics Activity (DMEA), a Department of Defense Applied Engineering Laboratory located on McClellan Air Force Base, presented over $1,000,000 in electro-optics and electronics equipment to California State University Sacramento (CSUS). Accepting the equipment on behalf of CSUS was Dr. Donald Gerth, President, and Dr. S.K. Ramesh, Department Chairman, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The equipment loaned included a laser unit, designed to carry out microscopic work on optical fibers. There were also fiber optic systems and clean room equipment that students can use to make and test integrated circuits. The equipment was loaned through an educational partnership agreement between the University and DMEA that allows for long-term collaboration between the organizations. At the event, US Congressman Doug Ose, State Assemblyman Dave Cox, and Sacramento County Supervisor Roger Dickinson talked about the importance of linking high-tech operations with education to further fuel Sacramentos high-tech development. They also stressed the opportunities for high-tech business development at McClellan Park. DMEA is remaining at McClellan Park after the Air Force Base closes in July 2001. The buildings and land around DMEA provide many opportunities for private sector development and future demand for area graduates with high-tech skills. DMEA is the high-tech anchor for development of the McClellan South District. They are the Nordstroms to draw other businesses to the area said Alice Astafan, Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Technology Center, a Sacramento based not-for-profit organization that facilitated the DMEA-CSUS partnership. CSUS excellent programs provide technology savvy graduates with an interest in the Sacramento area a key element to future development she continued. We are also blessed with excellent area representation at the local, state and federal level, with a vision to the future said Ms Astafan. Ted Glum, DMEAs Director and the host for the April 20 Equipment Transfer Ceremony, is a graduate of CSUS. He stated, Twenty-five percent of the DMEA engineers are graduates of the CSUS Electronics Engineering Program. Having DMEA support their program helps us ensure a continued supply of high quality engineering graduates in the future. [ Back to Top
